An evening in Kota Kinabalu

A brief stay in Jesselton

Kota Kinabalu is known as Jesselton during the British North Borneo Company Administration in the nineteen century.   It was an important trading port for the British Company.  In fact Jesselton was only a fishing village known as Api-Api.  Jesselton was named after the name of the vice chairman of the British North Borneo Company Sir Charles Jessel.

Sunset at Sepanggar Bay.   Sepanggar Bay was an early settlement site for the British North Borneo Company.  Later they moved to Api-Api.

At present  Sepanggar Bay is well known for a live open water exhibition,  It's where the Borneo Marine Research Institute located.   In the proximity  of the Universiti Sabah Malaysia.

A colossal exhibition tanks accommodates exotic and varieties of marine life.  Sepanggar Bay is about 29 km from kota Kinabalu.

In 1967  Jesselton was renamed as Kota Kinabalu by the then Chief Minister Tun Mustapha Bin Datu Harun.   Behind me is the second tallest building in Borneo.  It is 30 story circular glass building.   A rotating restaurant is  at the 18th floor.    Built in 1977 and named as Tun Mustapha Tower another landmark in Kota Kinabalu.

What had happened before the recent earthquakes in Sabah.

Stop over at Sepilok.

I was fortunate my stay at Ranau, Sabah was very pleasant  and delightful.    It was just before the natural disaster took place.   Ranau is a district where the Mount Kinabalu is located.  Kundasang is popular tourism town also in  the district of Ranau.   Ranau is 1.176 meters above sea level.  The weather is very cool and condusive.

In 1897 Mat Salleh a well known independence fighter built a fort in Ranau to drive the British North Borneo Company but the fort was destroyed  by the British in 1898.  During World War  II the Allies planes dropped napalm bombs to rescue  the Australian Army prisoners and to defeat the Japanese Occupation in Ranau.

Mamut Copper Mining is the only copper mining in Malaysia and situated in Ranau.  It was reported that this mining area is safe and  not affected by the earthquakes.

The high terrain to Ranau from Sepilok.    It was long journey but worthwhile for rural panorama.

Sepilok the Orang Utan  Rehabilitation Centre is a rescued centre for illegal possession of Orang Utan.  This sanctuary is also Sabah world famous tourist attraction.

If you wish to feed the primates you must come half an hour before the feeding time.

An international attraction.

Hot springs in Ranau is a popular destinations for local and foreign tourists.   Here I retreated and refreshed my tired limbs from the long journey from Sepilok.
